beginning again!

sketched this a few days ago

so why start a blog? To hold myself accountable since I don’t have a boss. I want to commit to uploading pics of my new drawings every week. I think it’ll be a great way to keep me motivated since I work from home with a kid.

I had a baby (Kumari) in August of 2008 and haven’t really drawn since. I kept thinking, but this is supposed to be my career. I’m a visual artist.

None of that seemed to matter anymore. There was a strange feeling of not having anything left to put out there. I felt blocked, like I didn’t know where I wanted to go with my art. Thinking too much about being “blocked” and feeling like I didn’t know what to do with my art just kept me in that same mode.

What I realize now is that I just needed to start, the drawings/sketches don’t have to go anywhere, I don’t need to be attached to some outcome, just do the work and everything else will follow…..

as the cartoonist/writer Hugh Macleod wrote in his book Ignore Everybody, a block is “just a symptom of feeling like you have nothing to say combined with the rather weird idea that you should feel the need to say something. Why? If you have something to say, then say it. If not, enjoy the silence while it lasts. The noise will return soon enough. In the meantime, you’re better off going out into the big, wide world, having some adventures and refilling your well.”

well, my well is fillin up, havin the biggest adventure ever being a mama and a family……now its time to draw again.

Chamindika, I am so grateful you are reemerging. The energy and playfulness of your creations adds to the world. I have missed seeing your work. I look forward to seeing your creations. The piece attached to the “Beginning Again!” is fantastic… as is the girl walking the octopus.

Thank you for sharing your process and your work.
